Detective Inspector Groat gets involved in the hunt for The Black Panther. One-man crime wave, robbing post offices, killing postmasters and kidnapping wealthy teenage heiress, Lesley Whittle.Groat meets and falls for Olivia, before discovering she is a high class call girl. She has a scheme for making big money. It involves blackmail - and Groat. This could very well be the end of his career, his marriage, his future.Groats wife, Gloria is telephoned by a mysterious foreign-sounding man who offers her a way of getting rich quick, buying properties at dirt cheap prices on the Costa del Sol. She does not realise this is former boyfriend, ‘Bonehead’ Bulstrode, now a convicted, serial rapist. Bonehead plots to have Groat framed for murder to get him out of the way for good.Groat gets his best friend Det Sgt Ted Pearson to help him with Olivia, but is arrested for the murder of a prostitute, Suzy Wong. Some serious string pulling will get him released, but not before he gets grilled by two goons from Complaints and Discipline, intent on pinning the murder on him.Gloria is abducted and imprisoned by Bonehead. Groat chases after her to Spain to rescue her, but again gets arrested, this time for impersonating a police officer. The kidnap goes horribly wrong and Lesley ends up dead, down a dark, dank drainage shaft. The Panther continues burgling. After a life-threatening chase at gunpoint, Groat helps capture him.To Gloria’s delight, Groat is called to Buckingham Palace to receive the Queen’s Police Medal for distinguished service - the offender profiling and bravery that led to the capture of The Black Panther. To cap it all, Groat manages to get Gloria what she wanted all along - luxurious living accommodation on the Costa del Sol.As always, Groat so very nearly falls in the midden, only to come out smelling of roses. There are some desperate moments along the way, but much humour as well.
